St Catherine's Church

September 2011

A tiny but delightful church hidden up a narrow lane and situated between the Swell Manor House and farm yard buildings, but it is obviously loved and well cared for.  We arrived as the morning service ended and had to pull the car over to the side of the road to let the many parishioners drive past.  The churchyard is small and does not have many headstones.  Inside the church the walls lean outwards and there is no electricity, apparently the farmer runs an extension lead into the church when lights are needed and in the winter it is heated with Calor gas fires.  The church dates from the 12th century, it doesn't have a tower or spire and is now a designated Grade I listed building.
